Smoky Vegan BBQ Tofu Ribs

These tofu ribs are smoky, firm, full of flavor and super cute! They are really easy to make too. I grilled these in a pan then inserted the skewers, but I think this would also be delicious if made on an actual BBQ grill. Pairs great with some corn on the cob, vegan baked beans and potatoes! I use the extra firm Sprouts brand tofu as it is my favorite. But if you cannot find that, try freezing your tofu first then defrosting it to firm it up even more. Double or triple up the recipe to make more!

(Serves 2 people. Cooking time after overnight marinade is approximately 25 minutes)

Ingredients:

  • Minced garlic (1 tsp)
  • Onion powder (1 tsp)
  • Soy sauce (1 tbsp)
  • Liquid smoke (1/2 tsp)
  • Smoked paprika (1 tsp)
  • Apple cider vinegar (1 tsp)
  • Vegan Worcestershire sauce (1/2 tsp)
  • Agave nectar (1 tsp)
  • Vegan BBQ sauce (1 tbsp)
  • Extra firm tofu (14 oz)
  • 4 skewers

Directions:

  • Cut your tofu into 10 thick strips
  • Mix together all of your ingredients (except the tofu and the skewers) in a large marinade container
  • Place the tofu strips in the marinade. If the marinade doesn’t cover the top of the tofu, flip the tofu strips once after 6-8 hours. Marinade overnight (12-16 hours).
  • After marinating the tofu it is now ready for cooking
  • Place a small amount of oil in a large pan, then carefully place the tofu strips. Make sure all tofu strips do not overlap. Pour the left over marinade over the top of the tofu
  • Fry on medium heat for approximately 20 minutes, carefully flipping the tofu halfway through. The tofu should be seared brown on each side.
  • Reduce the heat on the tofu and slather with more BBQ sauce. Cook for 2 more minutes on low heat
  • Carefully remove the tofu strips from the pan and place them on a plate in 2 rows of 5 strips each. Let them cool for a a couple of minutes
  • For the final touch, carefully insert 2 skewers through the set of 5 tofu ribs to make a tofu ladder!
